Answer
No.
Attendance, at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy,
is restricted to people who are employed by Law Enforcement
Agencies.

How
old do I have to be to become a policeman?
Answer
The
minimum age to be employed by a law enforcement unit is 21
years of age. The Minimum Standards for Employment or Appointment
by a law enforcement unit are outlined in Regulation 1002.

long is your Basic Training Course?
Answer
The
Basic Police Training Course is 12 weeks long.

What
is the maximum age for entry into law enforcement in Arkansas?
Answer
The
Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training does
not have a maximum age limit.

Where
do I stay during basic training?
Answer
The
Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy provides dorm rooms
and meals for Students attending classes at the Academy.
Question
What academic
average do I have to maintain in order to successfully complete
training?
Answer
In
order to successfully complete training, a minimum academic
average of 70% must be maintained.
Question
What
happens to students who fail an exam?
Answer
If
a student fails to achieve a minimum grade of 70% on a course
exam, the student is allowed to take a re-test. If the student
passes the re-test, the student is given a grade of 70%, regardless
of the grade made on the re-test. If the student fails to
achieve a grade of at least 70% on the re-test, the student
fails the course and is dismissed from the Academy.

If
I fail academically/firearms during Basic Training, can I
come back and try again?
Answer
Regulation
1005 (f)
states: If an officer fails to satisfactorily
complete the required training in a total of twenty (20) months
from the original date of employment or appointment, he shall
not be eligible to be retained as a law enforcement officer
in this State.
Regulation
1005 ( g)
states: Reappointment or re-employment as a law
enforcement officer will be considered only after the person
has been separated from law enforcement for at least twenty-four
(24) months. Upon reappointment or re-employment an officer
would be eligible to begin a new twelve )12) month probationary
period.
Regulation
1005 ( h)
states: Should the officer fail to meet the minimum
training requirement for a second time, he or she will not
be eligible for certification as a full-time, part-time, auxiliary
or in any other law enforcement officer position.

If
I get sick/injured during basic training, do I have
to drop out?
Answer
This
would depend on the seriousness of the illness or injury.
Students attending Basic Police Training are required to participate
in Physical Fitness, Defensive Tactics, Practical Exercises
and Firearms Qualification. Should the illness or injury,
in the judgment of the Training Staff, prevent the student
from satisfactorily passing in these areas, it may be recommended
that the department withdraw the student and allow them to
return at another time to complete their Basic Training.

I've
been out of law enforcement for three years, do I have to
attend another Basic?
Answer
No.
A Law Enforcement Refresher Course is all that would be required.
Regulation 1005 (5)(b) states: The Refresher Course
will be required for all Full-Time and Part-Time I law enforcement
officers who have previously met the training requirements,
but have been separated from law enforcement for a period
of three (3) to seven (7) years.

Can
our department conduct it's own Radar Course?
Answer
Yes,
as long as the course is taught by a Certified Police Traffic
Radar Instructor and the course curriculum has been approved
by the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards.

do I acquire the Radar exam?
Answer
To
receive the Radar exam submit a request, on department letterhead
to the Training Supervisor at the Arkansas Law Enforcement
Training Academy, P.O. Box 3106, E. Camden, AR 71711. Include
the Certification number of the course, the date(s) of the
class and the date(s) of the test. The exam will be mailed
to you.

I have to send test scores to you from our Radar Course?
Answer
Yes.
Test scores are submitted on Form F-18 (Attendance Roster)
to the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards, #4 State Police
Plaza Dr., Little Rock, AR 72209. (See Specification S-18).

My
radar operator certification has expired and I have been unable
to find a course being offered, do I have to attend the entire
course again?
Answer
No.
You would only be required to attend a Radar Refresher Course
to renew your certification. Contact the Standards office
at 501/682-2260 for the location and course dates of the next
available Refresher Course being offered in the state.

just taught a radar course, can I put my name on the roster
to renew my certification?
Answer
Yes.

What
do I have to send to Standards to get my Radar Operator Certification?
Answer
The
Standards Officer will require a copy of your Certificate
of completion of the class and a Form F-7 (Application for
Award of Law Enforcement Officer Certificate) in order to
issue your Radar Certification. The F-7 form will be found
in the front of your Radar Operator Manual, or contact the
Standards office and they will send you a copy of the form.

I hold my own Radar Course, who provides the certificates
for my students?

A
Form F-6 (Notice of Course Completion) can be used in lieu
of a certificate for your course. If requested the Standards
Office will issue certificates.

as long as the course is taught by a Certified Instructor

minimal qualifications as to training and experience for a
Field Training Officer are: A minimum of three years of experience
in law enforcement, the possession of not less than the General
Certificate. New applicants for field training officer certification
will have completed a minimum of 32 hours of Commission approved
classroom instruction including, but not limited to, the following
topics: Communications, Techniques of Instruction, Evaluation
of Training, Trainee Motivation and Counseling and Complete
review of the forms and their purpose in the Commission on
law Enforcement Standards and Training "Field Training Manual
for Law Enforcement Recruits". Applications for field training
officer certification will be endorsed by the department head
and submitted to Standards on Form F-12 (Application for Award
of Field Training Officer Certificate). (See Regulation 1014 and Specification
S-19).

What
is required to be a certified instructor?
Answer
Instructors
are certified on a basis of minimum qualifications in the
areas of education, training and experience. Instructor certification
is valid for five (5) years or sixty (60) consecutive months.
Instructor certification may be revoked whenever an instructor
is deemed by the Commission unqualified to continue teaching.
Minimum requirements include, but are not limited to, three
(3) years of law enforcement experience, a minimum education
background as recognized by the Commission will be required
for personnel instructing law enforcement subjects. (See Regulation 1002 (f) and Specification S-4). Applicants must have completed
and Instructor Development Training Course. See Regulation
1016 and Specification
S-16 for detailed information on this subject.

our department conduct it's own Firearms Instructor Course?
Answer
Yes,
as long as the course is taught by a Certified Firearms Instructor
and the course curriculum has been approved by the Commission
on Law Enforcement Standards.

provides the exam for the Firearms Instructor Course?
Answer
The
instructor providing the training will also provide the exam
for the Firearms Instructor Course.

I
am a certified instructor, does that entitle me to teach anything
our department requires or am I limited in what I can teach?
Answer
This
would depend on what type of Instructor Certification you
possess. To find out what subjects your are certified to teach,
contact the Commission on Law Enforcement Standards at (501)

What
do I have to send to Standards to certify a course?
Answer
The
Commission on Law Enforcement Standards will require an outline
and course description of the subject material being offered,
a schedule of classes, brief background showing qualifications
of instructors and the name of the school director or coordinator.
A request of course certification will be made in writing
and submitted on Form F-5 (Application for Certification of
Course) thirty (30) prior to the start of the course. (See
Regulation 1017 and Specification
S-18).

I have to send applications to ALETA when our department conducts
a course?
Answer
No.
Applications for the course your department conducts should
me maintained at your department.

How
many hours of training are required in order to maintain your
law enforcement certification?
Answer
There
is no minimum training requirement in order to maintain your
law enforcement certification. However, Regulation 1010 (e) states: The certification
of any law enforcement officer shall expire if the officer
does not serve as a law enforcement officer for six (6) consecutive
months.

just completed Instructor Development Training, where do I
get copies of the Jailer/Radar Instructor Manuals and films?
Answer
To
receive the Jailer/Radar Instructor Manuals submit a request,

E. Camden, AR 71711. The manuals will be mailed to you.

How
often do you send new training schedules out to the departments?
Answer
Information
concerning training offered by ALETA is sent out on a monthly
basis.
Question
I
am coming to an advanced course there at the Academy, do I
have to stay in the dorm?
Answer
No.
Students that attend advanced courses offered at the Academy
are not required to stay in the Academy dorm. However,
lodging and meal expenses outside the Academy are not paid
for by the Academy.
Question
What
happens if I miss class time due to sickness/injury during
training?
Answer
Students
are allowed to miss only 10% of the overall instruction time
due to illness/injury. Therefore if the time missed exceeded
the allotted 10% you would have to be withdrawn from the class.
Question
Can
I attend any Academy courses before I attend a Basic Course?
Answer
It
would depend on the course you wanted to attend. Some courses,
offered by the Academy, have a pre-requisite, those pre-requisites
must be met before any student is allowed to attend the class.
Courses that do not have pre-requisites would be open to all
law enforcement personnel.

If
you would like for ALETA to conduct a course at your department
